British Values: Mutual Respect

How do we cover Mutual Respect?

  • Our Behaviour Policy and Staff Code of Conduct references anti-discriminatory practice. Staff are cognisant of their role in promoting and modelling mutual respect.
  • We have a DEI policy and Equality Objectives which are updated annually.
  • All year groups are involved in PDC workshops which address diversity, equality and inclusion and have lessons on celebrating difference at the beginning of the academic year in PDC.
  • Students are encouraged to support their younger peers in a range of ways: Peer Mentors (Y12s supporting Y7 tutor groups), Subject Mentoring (Y12s mentoring Y11 students), Buddy Reading (Sixth Form and Y11 reading with Y7 and Y8 students).
  • Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and Wellbeing Ambassadors provide pastoral support to their peers; being available at lunchtimes in the Welfare Hub and/or designated Quiet Spaces
  • Anti-Bullying Ambassadors receive annual training so they know how to support their peers; they run events for Anti-Bullying week, and may mentor individual students.
  • Books chosen for DEAL include DEI themes (homelessness, neurodiversity)
  • The Feminista and Diversity group run initiatives across the school to raise awareness and promote mutual respect, for example, leading assemblies and running events for Diversity Week.
  • Teachers use diverse examples in their lesson resources so that all students feel recognised in our school community.
  • Displays around the school celebrate difference, e.g. LGBTQ+ writers in English, female entrepreneurs in Business, diverse artists.
