Year 7 Poetry Event 2018

In October our Year 7 students participated in a poetry workshop with poet Matt Black to celebrate National Poetry Day. Matt writes poetry for both children and adults and held the prestigious post of Derbyshire Poet Laurette. He started writing aged just 14, inspired by the belief that his parents didn’t understand him, a desire to become more articulate and to improve his intelligence. His themes include reality, fantasy, emotions and diversity. Matt read several humorous poems including ‘The Grumpy Unicorn’ which explores the sense of feeling different but the same. He challenged the students to write a poem on the theme of change, explaining what they would do if they had the opportunity to be in charge.

If I were in charge by Alicia Day

If I were in charge
I would help children in need
If I were in charge
I would ban lies and greed
I would make murder a thing of the past
And make love, care and hope last
I would share all I’ve got
And make the weather always hot
I would play with all my friends
And make the fun never end
