Year 7 Poetry Event 2019

Year 7 Poetry Event 2019

In October our Year 7 students participated in a poetry workshop with poet John Dougherty to celebrate National Poetry Day.

John started writing aged 18 as a way to express his thoughts and feelings. He writes both fiction and poetry for children and has had 33 books published. His themes include reality, fantasy, emotions and diversity. John read and performed several humorous poems and songs including, ‘Auntie Fred’ and ‘Note to an English Teacher.’ The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and came away with the message that poetry is all about having fun with words.

Students were challenged to write a poem on the theme of truth and what it means to them.

Truth by Henry Lewins

Truth is like philosophy
Well that is my belief
It can be about sadness and sorrow
What is down beneath

I think about it
You think about it
Sometimes about the sad bit.
But we think about the glad part
The bit that makes us laugh
The funny bit that makes time pass

Truth can be happiness, joy and laughter
That is what it can be
That is what truth means
What truth means to me
